identifying local opportunities

1.  1.     St. Petersburg restaurant reading room is closing for the summer, maybe for good

·         This article is about a very popular restaurant located in St. Pete and is home to the semi-finalist for the 2018 James Beard foundation best chef award. The restaurant isn’t as successful as it has been in the past and isn’t making as much money in the past.

·         The problem presented in this story would be that not enough people are either eating out anymore because they would rather personally cook, or they simply can’t afford to eat out.

·         This is a problem for everyone that works at the reading room because they just simply aren’t making enough money.

2.     2.  Tampa city council aide submits her resignation a day after her “cough” video went viral

·         This story is about the council women who resigned early Thursday afternoon after allegedly “coughing a curse word” as she walked by the table. Apparently, it was known that she was upset about the ruling that was being announced by the rest of the council when the cough occurred.

·         The problem presented in this story is that there wasn’t a consensus in the voting and people were clearly upset with the ruling, resulting in an open seat on the Tampa city council.

·         This is a problem in my opinion for the city of Tampa. There is now an open seat that needs to be filled when other issues are at hand.

3.       3. Mother in custody after Hillsborough deputies find 1-year-old missing boy safe

·         This article is about a mother who was taken into custody after child protective services reports that she was neglecting her child. Her child went missing for roughly 9 days and was found safe. The child is in good health and safe.

·         The problem in this article is child neglect by the mother. The mother already had a warrant out for her arrest and was clearly putting the child in danger.

·         The person this problem occurs to is the child. Especially at such a young age young kids need to be watched carefully, so I’m quite sure if the neighbors called CPS on the mother it wasn’t the first sign that the child was being neglected.

4.   4.     Aggressive, 11-foot alligator busts through window of clearwater home.

·         The story is about a clearwater home that had an alligator break through the bottom window near the kitchen. Luckily alligator trappers were able to secure the gator and no one, including the gator was harmed.

·         The problem in the story is alligators can be very dangerous and usually unaggressive. The alligator breaking into the home says it seems very aggressive and hostile.

·         This can be a problem for other homeowners around the neighborhood.

5.   5.     Largo finds alternative to reducing speed limits

·         This story is about the city of clearwater city council deciding to not change the speed limit in residential areas and needing to come up with an alternate decision on how to make a change. They are still making decisions on what the best way to invoke change would be

·         The problem is the speeding. Being a residential are there could be kids or elderly people walking around the neighbor hood and speeding can be a very dangerous thing

·         This can be an issue for any living in or around the residential areas where the speeding takes place.

  1. These are all very interesting articles, particularly the on dealing with the alligator in the home. I imagine this will continue to be a problem as Florida's population moves inward towards much of our remaining natural alligator habitat. Bull gators roam a large territory and much of their behavior is dictated by temperature so they may continue seeking shelter during the warmest and the coldest months.

  2. Nicholas,
You choose very interesting local stories to talk about and I think this is really well written. I found the article about the alligator going into a families home the must fun and interesting to read. I live on a lake and there are always alligators coming up to my gate and even trying to go in the pool so I know there is definitely a recurring issue. There was even a dog that was eaten by an alligator in my neighborhood, which is awful.

  3. Hello, I really enjoyed reading the articles you chose. The one that stood out to be the most was the fourth article you picked. I could not believe such a big alligator would go into someone house like that. Article five was also interesting to me. Speeding can be a big issue. Maybe they should add speed bumps in a neighbor hood to help reduce speeding.

These article topics are very good, the stories are eye grabbers as well as an opportunity. The alligator story must have been crazy to those it happened to. I couldn't imagine an alligator coming from my lake into my house. Crossing so many obsticlesin its way. Anyway, good job and well written.
